How to Prepare for a Children's Photoshoot

Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts for what your child should be doing the night before, and the day of their photoshoot! Whether this is your child’s first shoot or they are a seasoned professional, these tips will help both of you feel prepared and ensure that the day goes smoothly.

DO:

  1. Gently slough lips with a damp washcloth and moisturize lips with thick balm for example, CeraVe Healing ointment or Vaseline.

  2. Remove nail polish (except clear), also remove temporary tattoos or body art.

  3. Wash hair the night before to allow it to be completely dry for the shoot.  Make sure that shampoo is completely out, and if you use conditioner, apply only at the ends and rinse it thoroughly. The parent may have to supervise this process to make sure that the child’s hair is rinsed completely, and that no residue remains.  Please arrive with the hair product-free.

  4. Remove your child’s earrings before coming to the shoot.  It can avoid unnecessary pain and also prevents you from losing the jewelry!

  5. Wrap an ice pack in a clean washcloth, and gently apply to the eye area if your child wakes up with puffy eyes.

  6. Bring in your favorite hair products and we can decide if we will use them. Also feel free to bring along your child’s personal brush and comb—and any hair clips/ribbons.

DON’T:

  1. Tweeze or wax facial hair less than two days before the shoot.  If you are comfortable, you can carefully use a small facial razor to remove excess hair (peach fuzz).

  2. Panic if your child wakes up with a scratch or blemish.  Usually these small issues can be removed if they appear in the photos.

  3. Scratch or pick any acne. It is much easier to cover a blemish that has not been aggravated.

  4. Use unfamiliar creams or lotions, this could irritate the skin.

  5. Wear a tight ponytail or braid to the shoot. Hair is the easiest to work with when it is down and product free!
